Greens Call for Concrete Agreement on Limiting and Unity
VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Green Party of Vancouver is reviewing OneCity’s proposal regarding a “members’ primary.”
We agree that clarity and urgency are needed. However, unity cannot be achieved with attention to a mayoral mechanism alone, particularly on a timeline proposed by OneCity that we are only learning about now. As we have stated in prior negotiations, any agreement made in principle must be ratified by our respective memberships in accordance with our bylaws.
Progressive cooperation must include a binding limiting agreement across Council, School Board, and Park Board. Without this, any primary would be merely symbolic rather than substantive.
COPE recently tabled a clear and balanced limiting proposal:
- Up to five combined Mayor/Council candidates
- Up to four School Board candidates
- Up to four Park Board candidates
The Greens have agreed to this framework in principle. We believe it represents a fair and workable ceiling that preserves the option for no single party to dominate any elected body.
As we have consistently maintained, we are prepared to finalize a limiting agreement as well as a non-aggression agreement, and to begin structured discussions on a “people’s primary” process.
The time for broad statements has passed. The time has come for concrete commitments.
Vancouver voters expect cooperation grounded in fairness and mutual respect. We remain ready to deliver it.
