Chinese New Year marks the most important Chinese Holiday. On this holiday, families and communities come together to celebrate the Year of the Horse.
The 15 day celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the past and look forward with hope. In Vancouver and around the world we are facing challenges such as democracy and climate change that affect everyone and can unite us all as we work towards solutions together.
The Chinese-Canadian community is strongest here in Vancouver. Since the 19th Century, Chinese workers have made tremendous contributions in building railways and the country, yet having persevered through hardship and unequal treatment. Not only do we need to recognize the dark spots in our history, but we also must recognize the contributions made by earlier generations and today’s Chinese community in Vancouver. Many Chinese community organizations have put in tremendous efforts towards sustainability in our society and economy. They have established support programs for new Chinese-speaking immigrants so that they can have a smooth transition into their new lives here in Vancouver. One of the most important aspects for new immigrants to consider is becoming an informed voter. The thriving Chinese-language media in this city is succeeding in engaging new immigrants in the electoral process.
May the year of the Horse bring you good fortune, good health and prosperity!
